Hello, my name is Julie Bentley. I would like to tell you about the help Joan Walshaw and Kinsley & Fitzwilliam Community Resource Centre have given me with my career.
I first started attending courses at Kinsley & Fitzwilliam Community Resource Centre in January 2001. In October 2001 I had been made redundant with my employer and my experience of current office technology was very limited. Kinsley & Fitzwilliam Community Resource Centre was recommended as a place where I could learn how to use computers and the packages generally used in today’s offices.
The following month I got a part-time position with a finance firm and still managed to attend the courses I had started. In two years I have attained Word Processing in Level 1, 2 & 3, CLAIT, IBT2 and ECDL. Gaining qualifications like these says many things to a potential employer. Its not just the passing (although the achievement is still paramount) but also the fact you have taken the time out of your busy life to improve yourself. I am positive that these qualifications got me the interviews when I started looking for a more senior post.
Unfortunately in the job market today just having the qualifications isn’t enough – you have to be able to conduct a very good interview. After a few disappointments I was advised by the Reception of Joan Walshaw the Careers Office who visits the Resource Centre on a Tuesday morning. Joan coached me on likely questions I would be asked at an interview I had coming up. She gave me valuable tips on how to answer questions and what would be potential content for my answers. I am very pleased to say I got the position and I am looking forward to starting my new job.
